Royal Navy sailors pull the coffin to ensure its safety for the remainder of the route. Following Victoria's funeral in 1901, in which her coffin was carried on the gun carriage, the horses that were to pull it freaked out and reared up, threatening to topple the coffin off the carriage. As a result, Captain Prince Louis of Battenberg proposed to the new monarch, Edward VII, to have the senior service take over. Since then, the new procedure has become a tradition that is followed at all state funerals.
